The Pyrenees is a mountain range located in northern Spain and south-west of France, with it being the historic natural border between both countries. There are more than 400 kms of peaks and valleys that extend from Creus Cape in the province of Girona to the Cantabric Sea. There are three autonomous regions in Spain that the can lay claim to being part of the Pyrenees, those being Navarra, Aragon and Catalonia. Within this region we find several summits breaching the 3000 metres mark, such as Aneto which measures in at 3404m, Posets at 3375m, Monte Perdido with a height of 3355m and Maldito with it's 3350m.
Along it's 400 kms there are many stunning ski resorts to cheack out. Equipped with restaurants, magnificent skiing facilities, bars, hotels and plenty of holiday accommodation including apartments and ski chalets, the ski resorts in the Pyrenees are now beginning to compete with the finest the Alps can offer. Of these ski resorts, Candanchu, Panticosa, Formigal and Astun stand out as the highlights with further resorts including Baqueira Beret, La Molina, Boi Taul and Cerler...all situated in the Catalonian Pyrenees. Many people also decide to situate themselves in the delightful town of Jaca, which is a short drive from the ski resorts and fills with skiers over winter given that it has plenty on offer to keep you entertained after a hard day carving those slopes!
And then there's Andorra, where there are five well-equipped ski resorts to choose from. Here you can enjoy skiing, snowboarding, trekking, mountain biking, horseback riding, kayaking, canoeing, rock climbing...with activities throughout the year. In the summer the temperatures are mild with an average of 20 degrees celsius during the day and dropping down to 12 at night, so whatever the season the Pyrenees always has something to offer adventure-sports enthusiasts.
The Pyrenees also offers nature enthusiasts spectacular landscapes and wildlife. With numerous areas of conservation like the picture-perfect Ordesa National Park and Monte Perdido, there is so much to explore. Within these parks you'll find rugged peaks, gushing waterfalls and sweeping green valleys that will take your breath away. Animal species like the wild boar, groundhogs, bearded vultures and even wild bears populate the area, with picturesque mountain villages, pine tree blankets and wild forests a common sight.
There are endless things to do and see in the Pyrenees.... sports to practice, places to eat, sceneries to explore and a wide variety of services for the growing numbers of visitors who come and enjoy a fantastic holiday in the beautiful Pyrenees. |
